Choose what is better

After many of Jesus' followers had deserted him, he asked the 12 disciples if they were also going to leave. Peter replied, "To whom would we go?" In his straightforward way, Peter answered for all of us--there is no other way. Though there are many philosophies and self-styled authorities, Jesus alone has the words of eternal life. People look everywhere for eternal life and miss Christ, the only source. Stay with him, especially when you are confused or feel alone.

““You do not want to leave too, do you?” Jesus asked the Twelve. Simon Peter answered him, “Lord, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life.”John‬ ‭6‬:‭67‬-‭68‬ ‭NIV‬‬

Reflections

Somehow the above passage reminds of what happened between Mary and Martha. Martha was too bothered by all the prep work that needs to be done and was feeling frustrated that Mary isn’t helping her. She eventually ‘complained’ to the Lord with the hope that He will get her to help. However, He said to her in reply ““Martha, Martha,” the Lord answered, “you are worried and upset about many things, but *few things are needed—or indeed only one. Mary has chosen what is better*, and it will not be taken away from her.””Luke‬ ‭10‬:‭41‬-‭42‬ ‭NIV‬‬

I was being reminded that many things may matter in the course of our life. While growing up perhaps our studies and our results? Followed by our career and future partner? Then we start to worry about our children, their marriage, their kids and then we worry what will happen to us when we retire, then we start to worry about our health, etc. Life’s worries don’t seem to end isn’t it?

However, being a Christian, what is the one thing that is most important to us? It cannot be anything of the above, right? Really meh? But how is it that we all somehow end up worrying about all those things? The world caught up with us or we try to catch up with the world. Are all those things worth our trouble? Not saying family, etc is not important. But I come to realise all those things make us a Martha. We get so busy working “for the Lord” but we forgot it is the Lord that we seek. Not the works.

He may place us in certain ministries but it is still Him that we seek. Without any relationship with Him, we are just the same as any lay person in the streets. What is making us different is how Christ’s love is being sown into people’s hearts. No matter where we are and what we do or say, it is about Christ and His love. No love, no life. So learn from Mary. Sit at His feet. “But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well.”

‭‭Matthew‬ ‭6‬:‭33‬ ‭NIV‬‬
