Who do we offer ourselves to

Who do we offer ourselves to

When Paul uses the term "instrument of evil," he uses a word that can refer to a tool or weapon. Our skills, capabilities, and bodies can serve many purposes, good and bad. In sin, every part of our bodies is vulnerable. In Christ, every part can be an instrument for service. It is the one to whom we offer our service that makes the difference. We are like lasers that can burn destructive holes in steel places or do delicate cataract surgery. Will you give yourself completely to God, asking him to put you to good use for his glory?

“Do not offer any part of yourself to sin as an instrument of wickedness, but rather offer yourselves to God as those who have been brought from death to life; and offer every part of yourself to him as an instrument of righteousness.”

‭‭Romans‬ ‭6‬:‭13‬ ‭NIV‬‬

Reflections

Indeed the main question becomes who do we offer ourselves to? There’s no grey area in this and it can only be God or to something else. Quite similarly, there is also no grey area as to who we worship. These two are kind of tied together as one and we cannot exactly worship God if we give our bodies to something else. That would not make any sense.

On the reverse, if we have not been giving ourselves to God, something else is happening then. At this point we may need to pause ourselves what or who, are we giving ourselves to? We need to be mindful and careful because that can lead to idol worship, as nothing can be greater than God Himself. Our priorities need to be set right so we also move according to His will.

Our sins are nailed to the cross with Jesus when He died for us. It is a new and risen life that we are now living. We therefore cannot be living in a life that we lived in the past and expect God to do His thing. Every single day, we are challenged and tasked to take up our cross to follow Him. So are we doing that? If not, then it is good for us to come to Him to seek forgiveness and repent of our sins and seek His grace, allowing us to be cleanse of all our unrighteousness and be made new again.

This ‘rite of passage’ has been there all along but we still need to be intentional in seeking Him and give ourselves to Him as an offering, so that He can use us freely for His glory.
