Are we giving credits to Christ?
Paul writes against any philosophy of life based only on human ideas and experiences. Paul himself was a gifted philosopher, so he is not condemning philosophy. He is condemning teaching that credits humanity, not Christ, with being the answer to life's problems. That approach becomes a false religion. There are many man-made approaches to life's problems that totally disregard God. To resist heresy you must use your mind, keep your eyes on Christ, and study God's Word.
“See to it that no one takes you captive through hollow and deceptive philosophy, which depends on human tradition and the elemental spiritual forces of this world rather than on Christ.”
Colossians 2:8 NIV

Reflections
There are many people out there who actually shares a lot on philosophies. In the Chinese culture, there is confucius, others too from Greek, etc. and needless to say they do have many followers. The common thing between them and the rest is that these people usually do not believe in God. To them, they felt that God does not exist and that things happen not because of God but because it is all a coincidence.
I’m not against philosophers or philosophy but I felt God’s teachings go a much deeper way than them. For example, when people say do good and be kind. It’s rather general to be honest. In the Word, God taught us to love our neighbours, love also our enemies.
To the lay person, a common thinking is that why should I love my enemy? Especially when they did so much wrong and cannot be forgiven. Putting things into perspective, isn’t that who we are? We are all evil persons who did things that seemed unforgivable. Yet, our God in His graciousness, forgive us and made us new. He did it out of love, out of grace. If the world all thinks like Him, and has a heart like Him, the world would be a much better place to live in.
I’m just looking forward to the day of His second coming where it will be heaven on earth.
