Confession of sins

Confession of sins

Here, John was attacking the second claim of the false teachers: that people had no natural tendency toward sin, that they "[had] no sin,'' and that they were then incapable of sinning. This idea is at best self-deception and at worst a bald-faced lie. The false teachers refused to take sin seriously. They wanted to be considered Christians, but they saw no need to confess and repent. The death of Christ did not mean much to them because they didn't think they needed it. Instead of repenting and being purified by Christ's blood, they were encouraging sin among believers. In this life we are always capable of sinning, so we should never let down our guard.

“If we claim to be without sin, we deceive ourselves and the truth is not in us.”

‭‭1 John‬ ‭1‬:‭8‬ ‭NIV‬‬

Reflections

This verse from 1 John 1:8, usually follows by the next verse in verse 9. “If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness.”

‭‭1 John‬ ‭1‬:‭9‬ ‭NIV‬‬

The bible has made it explicit that the confession of sins is not only necessary but also biblical. Like how the devotional puts it, if we think we are sinless, we are only deceiving ourselves. The confession is part of us being Christians because we want to be close to God just like in the olden times, where we have freedom to roam the garden of Eden, we have no fear, where we are in full obedience to the Lord.

The confession of sins becomes a part that helps us to achieve clean hands and pure hearts. If we have nothing to hide anymore, we and the Lord become like close friends. He knows us and we know Him. The Holy Spirit dwells in us and helps us to understand His heart even more. Or sometimes He allows us to see things from His perspective so we gain a different level of understanding of the world and how we can deal with the things in life.

When we remove the barrier between us and God, we create an intimate relationship with Him too. So that every time we talk to Him, it is a heart to heart talk and we gain wisdom and knowledge from the Lord.

So Father, help us to come to You every single day. Help bring to our minds the things that we are sinning against you and against our fellow brothers and sisters. Help us to be able to come to You to confess those sins and live a right and forgiven life from henceforth. Thank You Lord. In Jesus’s most precious name we pray. Amen.
