The other kind of sin

The other kind of sin

We tend to think that doing wrong is sin. But James tells us that sin is also not doing right. (These two kinds of sin are sometimes called sins of commission and sins of omission.) It is a sin to lie; it can also be a sin to know the truth and not tell it. It is a sin to speak evil of someone; it is also a sin to avoid him or her when you know he or she needs your friendship. We should be willing to help as the Holy Spirit guides us. If God has directed you to do a kind act, to render a service, or to restore a relationship, do it. You will experience a renewed and refreshed vitality to your Christian faith.

“If anyone, then, knows the good they ought to do and doesn’t do it, it is sin for them.”

‭‭James‬ ‭4‬:‭17‬ ‭NIV‬‬

Reflections

A short and interesting convo took place in my sister’s car as we travel to go shopping. We were chatting about my aunt who was ever complaining. And recently she has been complaining about having leg pains.

My mum said that my uncle has been reminding her to do some form of stretching exercises. She did not respond to those advices but each time they meet, she will continue to complain. I told my mum, maybe you need to ask her, instead of complaining, what has she tried to do to relieve the symptoms? Because just talking without taking actions will definitely offer no relief! My mum was like ya ya, I should tell her that. However after a while, mum said aiya never mind lah! Don’t want to tell her anything. Why must tell her? I was like just say lah. My sister added, ya, you tell her already but if she don’t listen its her problem but if you know but never say then becomes your problem liao. I was like, yes exactly!

I think towards people who are difficult to love, it is easy to brush things off and say never mind. Don’t care, these kind of things. But if God in us, then we ought to do what is right, whether we like the person or not.

Referring back to the Word, “If anyone, then, knows the good they ought to do and doesn’t do it, it is sin for them.” We hope none of us will commit such sins and do what is an order from God, even if we struggle about it. Ultimately it is in obedience that we follow, to show the love of Christ through us to others that we have met. God Bless.
